Global Representation

NIA Members are represented on a number of global fora and committees:

Policy & Regulation:

The NIA provides the Vice-Chair to the BIAC (Business and Industry Advisory Committee)  Nanotechnology Committee.

The NIA is a lead-representative of BIAC at the OECD WPMN (Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials), as well as the OECD WPN (Working Party on Nanotechnology).

Standards & Norms:

The NIA is an expert participant in the ISO/TC 229 (International Organisation for Standardization / Technical Committee on Nanotechnologies).

The NIA is a liaison member of CEN/TC 352 (European Committee for Standardization / Technical Committee on Nanotechnologies), as well as a full member of the BSI NTI/1 (British Standards Institution committee on Nanotechnologies).

Standards & Norms

The role of standards in the development of nanotechnology is of paramount importance, because there is an obvious need to provide industry and research with suitable tools to aid the application and commercialisation of these technologies. It is also essential that regulators and health- and environmental-protection agencies have available reliable measurement systems and evaluation protocols supported by well-founded and robust standards.

Several standards committees are working in the area of nanotechnology on different levels:

NIA is routinely conducting public consultations amongst its members on all of the standardisation documents. Please follow this link to Members-only area to read past and present consultation documents.
