NIA Press
Released on Monday 14 May 2012
In an interview with Genetic
Engineering & Biotechnology News (GEN), the Nanotechnology Industries
Association (NIA) raised concerns about the implementability of the
European Commission's recommendation of a definition of the term 'nanomaterial'.
"Instead of a business development
possibility, it is much more a threat of costly product compliance," Dr Steffi Friedrichs, Director General of the NIA, told GEN.
The NIA, which represents a diverse membership of large
and small companies interested in the utilisation of nanotechnologies in nearly
all industrial sectors, is...

The European Commission Joint Research Centre
(JRC), supported by the Nanotechnology Industries Association (NIA)and its member company BASF
has published the second report in a series on the NM- Series of Representative
Manufactured Nanomaterials. Entitled 'NM- Series
of Representative Manufactured Nanomaterials: Zinc Oxide NM-110, NM-111,
NM-112, NM-113 Characterisation and Test Item Preparation,' the report
is the second publication documenting results obtained under the OECD
WPMN Sponsorship Programme on the Safety Testing of Manufactured Nanomaterials.

'Nanotechnology has already become a reality in some areas and promises great things in others. However, the road to the nano future still includes a number of obstacles,' starts a a feature article in this month's issue of Chemistry & Industry. Dr Steffi Friedrichs, Director General of the Nanotechnology Industries Association (NIA), contributed clarifications on nanotechnology in food and cosmetics, highlighting in particular the industries' efforts to establish the safety of their products beyond regulatory requirements.

'NanoAgri is one of
very many promising fields where the use of nanotechnologies can bring benefits
to all parties involved in the agricultural chain, from input producers to
farmers and consumers,' comments Dr David Carlander, Director of Advocacy
at the Nanotechnology Industries Association, in an exclusive interview with New AG International magazine (Issue:
November 2011) in a feature article entitled Nanotechnology in
Agriculture: When tiny stuff has huge effect on Plant Growth.

The Nanotechnology
Industries Association (NIA) recently shed light on the debate on the 'why
and wherefore' of the European Commission's recent recommendation for a
definition of the term 'nanomaterial' in the context of existing 'nano'-definitions:
"The ISO definition is a technical definition,
while the Commission's is a regulatory one," says Steffi Friedrichs,
Director General of the Nanotechnology Industries Association (NIA) in an interview
with ChemicalWatch. "These are significant differences in
purpose, deeply influencing the scope and wording of the two different...

On the 7th of November 2011, the official launch of the European Research partnership project
MARINA (MAnaging RIsks of
NAnoparticles) was announced by the Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM). As one of the project partners, the Nanotechnology Industries Association (NIA) is responsible for the NM-Series materials and reference dossiers.
The aim of the project is to develop
specific reference methods for managing the potential risks of engineered
nanomaterials (ENM). The goal of the project is to address the four central
themes in the ENM risk...

In response to the European Commission's Recommendation on a Definition of Nanomaterials, the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) stated that the definition is too broad, saying it would add 'unnecessary burden' as well as legal uncertainty for companies. In addition, fears were expressed that too many products would fall under the scope of the definition, as for example mineral pigments used in paints and others that have already been on the market for decades. While the chemical industry agrees with the Commission that the definition should not be swayed by hazard or risk...
