NIA Masterclass & Workshop: Measurement & Characterisation
The start of the nanotechnology era was to a large extent shaped by the advancement of measurement and charactersation techniques. Nearly 30 years on, milestones in nanotechnology are still going hand-in-hand with breakthroughs in characterisation technologies, and restrictions to the application of nanotechnology are set by limits of measurement and detection methods.
Measurement and characterisation play a central role in the development and advancement of nanotechnologies, from enabling state-of-the-art R&D, to ensuring occupational and environmental safety, to supporting quality assurance and standards certification.
This NIA Masterclass & Workshop is organised and run in collaboration with CEMMNT, the Centre of Excellence in Metrology for Micro and Nano Technologies. It will give an overview of the role of measurement and characterisation in applied nanotechnologies, and subsequently highlight the added commercial value provided by advanced measurement and characterisation technologies, using a number of case studies delivered by both technology provides and users.

NanoEurope Congress & Exhibition 2008
The sixth NanoEurope will be held in St.Gallen (Switzerland) on September 16 and 17, 2008. The NanoEurope is a European specialist congress in conjunction with a trade show for the transfer of technology and know-how in the field of nanotechnology. This year’s focus will be on multifunctional textiles, nanobased electronics and sensor systems, and systems with functionalized surfaces and structures. In addition, one session will explicitly address management staff and investors who wish to enhance their nanotechnology know-how. Furthermore, the 4th NanoRegulation Conference will be held, which is concerned with voluntary measures for handling risks associated with nanotechnology.
Please find more information on www.nanoeurope.com.
UK NanoForum 2008

- Clean Technologies
- Intelligent Connected World
NIA receives RAEng grant to enhance engineers’ public engagement skills
The Nanotechnology Industries Association was granted £35000 to develop and conduct an ‘Advanced Workshop Course in Public Communication and Applied Ethics for Nanotechnologists’. The grant was awarded by the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Ingenious Programme (Ingenious – engaging citizens; engaging engineers); it funds an NIA-led consortium to create a 5-day advanced workshop course for UK-based research and company engineers (postgraduate and upwards) working in the field of nanotechnology.
The course will enable participants to:
- increase their awareness of the associated public communication and applied ethical issues;
- encourage, support and train them in communicating confidently with the public, the media and politicians about such topics in their own fields of nanotechnology; and
- enable them to carry out such activities in their own organisational settings.

NIA Ltd launches at the UKNanoForum
Today, UKNanoForum, the UK’s biggest nanotechnology trade fair, marks the launch of the Nanotechnology Industries Association formation as a limited company, enabling the lobbying body to abandon previous restrictions and fully support the unified representation of all nanotechnology industries on a global level.
Dr. Steffi Friedrichs, director of the NIA said: ‘As a limited company we can now offer more independent and internationally relevant support, acting as a proactive lobbying body for the collective nanotechnology industries on a multi-national level. Through the establishment of strategic international partnerships, formation of international fora and by facilitating a Code of Conduct for responsible nanotechnology, we aim to proactively influence policies and establish a separation of nanotechnologies’ issues from those of other technologies.’

NIA supports Responsible NanoCode Consultation in the US
The Nanotechnology Industries Association (NIA) today participated in the US launch of the Responsible NanoCode. Dr Steffi Friedrichs, Director of the NIA, introduced the history leading to the initiative to develop the Code for Responsible Nanotechnology, and was followed by Ms Rachel Crossley ofInsight Investment, who explained its content and ‘comply or explain’ background.
The introduction of the Code was followed by a panel discussion, supported by Dr David Rejeski of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Dr Michael Holmes of Lux Research, Dr Michael Hansen of the Consumers Union, and Mr Sean Murdock of the NanoBusiness Alliance.
