Background: On 1 December 2011, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) granted a conditional registration under section 3(c)(7)(C) of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) for HeiQ-AGS-20 which is to be incorporated into textiles to suppress growth of bacteria. AGS-20 contain nano-silver as an active ingredient and is a nano-silver-silica composite where the nano-silver is sintered onto larger amorphous silicon dioxide particles.
Analysis: This analysis by Nanotechnology Industries Association, NIA, discusses the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conditional registration of the nanomaterial AGS-20 from HeiQ Materials. Further, it addresses possible impacts on other EPA regulated products and authorisation of nanomaterials in general. In addition, it summarises the conditions EPA stipulates for the conditional registration and indicates the main outstanding data requirements.
