Priority Areas

The priority areas that the NIA will initially focus upon include:

Promote & Raise Awareness

The purpose of the NIA is to promote the responsible use of nanotechnology and raise awareness, in a balanced way, among key audiences including the media, government, NGOs and other stakeholders of the applications and the potential.

Position Statements & Papers

The NIA will coordinate the generation of position statements and papers in areas relevant to the members. Initially, efforts will focus on the following activities:

  1. Conduct of a technology foresight exercise that will examine current products, current developments and future applications; the output from this study will be an evaluation of the diverse jigsaw of products that currently derive distinctive benefit from their nano-structure/formulation together with a view of potential for nanotechnologies over the next 10-15 years.
  2. Establishment of an industry-based perspective on the current nomenclature, threats and opportunities associated with risk-based classification systems, and forecasts for the future; some recommendations will be established as ‘industry-supportable’ recommendations.

Securing the Future of Nanotechnology

The NIA works closely with government departments and related bodies, in order to assist the development of policies and regulations, that ensure a secure future for nanotechnology.

Strategy and Growth Plans

The NIA works with industry participants to develop strategies and growth plans for the representative network of nanotechnology companies that is the Nanotechnology Industries Association, and to encourage and excite industry participation and support.
