Global Representation

NIA Members are represented on a number of globally influential fora and committees, such as:

The NIA is a member of BIAC’s Nanotechnology Network, and representative of BIAC at OECD working parties.

As a BIAC representative (see above), the NIA has been confirmed full member of the OECD WPMN (Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials), as well as full member of the newly established OECD WPN (Working Party on Nanotechnology).

Our Vision

The Nanotechnology Industries Association, NIA, was formed in 2005 by a group of companies from a variety of industry sectors, including healthcare, chemicals, automotive, materials processing, and consumer products. Nanotechnology is a rapidly growing area of commercial activity, it is highly multi-disciplinary and cuts across a wide range of markets and industrial sectors. The NIA supports the wide range of commercial industries as it influences and explains the opportunities and uncertainties within this broad and emergent field.

The unique feature of the NIA is its provision of a purely industry-led perspective derived from the views of the collective membership. This enables those seeking comment from industry to have one port of call and avoids the need to approach individual companies for statements on specific issues. In addition the breadth of the membership enables the NIA to put forward strong proposals to government and regulatory authorities to promote an environment that supports the application and utilisation of nanotechnologies.

The nanotechnologies industry is made up of many varied companies, all of which at different stages of their life cycle and with a variety of interests in the huge range of technologies that derive their benefit from the nanoscale. In the NIA, these companies have a representative association to create a clear single 'voice' on behalf of the industries’ views, to interface with government, to be a source for consultation on regulation and standards, to engage with the public, to communicate the benefits of nanotechnologies, to interact with the media, and to inform the debate on nanotechnology.
